Lab-Created Sapphire

About the stone

Lab-created white sapphire is man-made corundum (aluminum oxide) with the same chemical composition, the same crystal structure and the same hardness as natural sapphire. With a hardness of 9, it is the second-hardest gemstone after diamond, making it perfect for jewelry meant to be worn for a lifetime.

It is made by melting pure aluminum oxide at over 2,000 °C and letting it crystallize slowly under carefully controlled conditions. In just a few days or weeks, it creates what nature takes millions of years to form.

Blue sapphire owes its color to traces of iron and titanium. White sapphire, on the other hand, is almost pure corundum, free of any coloring elements, which gives it its clear, colorless transparency.

The first process for creating sapphire in a laboratory was developed by the French chemist Auguste Verneuil and introduced in 1902. The method, known as "flame fusion", is still used today, more than a century later.

Its strength and clarity have made it prized well beyond jewelry. Luxury watch crystals, camera lens protection and the windows of some scientific instruments are often made from synthetic sapphire.

Because it is created under controlled conditions, it offers consistent clarity and purity that are hard to find in natural white sapphires. The latter often undergo heat treatments to remove their yellowish or grayish tints.

Its brilliance is calmer and more crystalline than that of diamond, with fewer flashes of color. It is a understated elegance, ideal for those who prefer refinement without ostentation.

It is also a responsible choice: it involves no mining, has a transparent origin and an accessible price, while keeping all the qualities of an authentic precious gemstone.

As a true sapphire, it carries the same symbolism: loyalty, truth and wisdom. Its colorless hue adds clarity and purity. Sapphire is the birthstone of September and the traditional gift for a 45th wedding anniversary.

With a hardness of 9, it is remarkably scratch-resistant and suitable for everyday wear, including in rings. It only needs protection from very strong impacts.

Being colorless, it shows its brilliance best when clean. Clean it easily with lukewarm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush, then wipe it with a cloth. Its cool light is beautifully enhanced in 925 silver and white gold, while in 14K yellow gold it creates a warm, luminous contrast.
