        Care

Smoky Quartz is the brown-gray to nearly black variety of quartz.

It owes its hue to a slow and unexpected process: the natural irradiation of rocks, in the presence of trace amounts of aluminum in the crystal.

In essence, its color is “written” by the earth’s gentle radioactivity over millions of years.

In Scotland it is considered a national stone: the variety called cairngorm, named after the mountains of the same name, has been set since the 18th century in traditional Scottish jewelry.

It appeared in kilt pins, tartan brooches, and dagger handles, crafted by silversmiths from Inverness and Aberdeen.

Queen Victoria, enamored with the Scottish style at Balmoral, made it even more popular.

Today, mining in those mountains is forbidden, which makes older pieces with authentic cairngorm rare and highly sought after.

The shades range from light, transparent brown to a deep smoky gray, almost black.

Associated with stability, calm, and protection, Smoky Quartz is worn to clear the mind and dispel tension.

It has the same hardness of 7 as all quartz, so it’s suitable for everyday wear, requiring only that you avoid strong impacts.

It cleans easily with a soft cloth. Its neutral, elegant tone is beautifully showcased in 925 silver and yellow gold.
